
The fields, shared with neighboring Iraq, are expected to produce 500,000 b/d of oil.
First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said in the meeting of the council that this decision would set a precedent in the development of joint fields.
Petroleum Minister Bijan Namdar Zangeneh said the development project is the largest by Petroleum Ministry. He expressed hope that oil production would increase in the country with the development of West Karoun oil fields.
The West Karoun fields are planned to undergo development with an investment of $15.2 billion over four years.
